Makriyialos is situated in the south
east corner of Crete, half an hour away from the major towns of
Ierapetra to the West, and Sitia to the North. It belongs to the
prefecture of Lassithi, the easternmost part of Crete, two hours
away from the capital of the island, Heraklion.
Travel
to Makriyialos from Europe is either by air to Heraklion (international
routes are being opened to Sitia Airport in 2006) or by ferry from
the mainland to Heraklion, Agios Nicholas or Sitia. The region is
dominated by the azure blue Libyan Sea to the south and the large
mountain ranges of Thripti (1476m/4842ft) and Orno Oros (1238m/4062ft)
to the North. As
the island is only 15 to 18km wide in this area, the visitor can
witness a sharp contrast between the sea plain and the rugged mountains
in only a short drive.
The region of Makriyialos is a fine
example of this harmonious contrast. Its fertile soil, microclimate,
abundant olive groves, vineyards and greenhouses (the principle
crop being cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as bananas, and melons)
ensure that Makriyialos has a wonderful food culture, excellent
local produce and some very special wines. In recognition of the
natural beauty of this area and the importance of protecting the
environment, the local growers now produce organic olive oil and
wine, and the area has been awarded several European gold medals
for its oil.
